Today i got word that The New Vulcan Ale House, a brewpub that has been in the planning and early development stages for a couple years, is probably never going to materialize. It was to have been the first brewpub in Birmingham in more than a decade.
This ruins my day.
Alabama has many crazy beer laws, one of them being that brewpubs a) can only be located in counties that were wet prior to Prohibition, b) must be in buildings that have been officially declared historical, and c) cannot distribute their beer off premises in any way. Not surprisingly, there aren’t many brewpubs in the state.
The New Vulcan guys had made it pretty far along, but stuff happened. Sigh.

I have to say I saw this coming for the last few months, although I didn’t want to admit it to myself.

The tremendous length of time the project spent in very early stages had always made me concerned, but hope springs eternal. I wanted them to succeed sooo badly. Oh it’s so depressing.
